A Successful Summer School
The recently concluded AZTI Summer School 2023 at the mesmerizing Aquarium of San Sebastian, Spain, brought together brilliant experts and passionate individuals to discuss the innovative and practical tools for monitoring and assessing human pressures affecting marine biodiversity. This event, held from the 5th to the 7th of June, was a resounding success, leaving attendees inspired and equipped with newfound knowledge.
With a rich background in organizing international Summer Schools on marine research, AZTI ensured that this edition was no exception. The school allowed participants to delve into the cutting-edge topic of marine biodiversity and its multitude of challenges. Under the overarching theme of “Innovative and practical tools for monitoring and assessing multiple human pressures affecting biodiversity in marine systems,” the Summer School showcased a join action of OBAMA-NEXT, BIOcean5D, ACTNOW, and MARBEFES projects.
Throughout the event, renowned experts took the stage, sharing their insights and experiences. Attendees had the opportunity to learn about the practical applications of eDNA for monitoring various ecosystem components, the use of drones and artificial intelligence in mapping and tracking benthic and pelagic communities, and the assessment and modelling of cumulative impacts using state-of-the-art methodologies. The school also emphasized the importance of science communication, dedicating an afternoon to promote a workshop to enhance participants’ ability to effectively convey complex concepts to diverse audiences.
