AZTI Summer School 2026: Hands-on training on cumulative effects assessment for marine ecosystems

The AZTI Summer School 2026, titled “Cumulative effects of multiple human pressures at sea and their impacts on ecosystem components: a practical application for environmental status assessment”, will take place from 2–4 June 2026, with daily sessions running from 09:00 to 17:30.

Organised in the framework of the GES4SEAS project, the summer school offers hands-on training on Tikta, a free software tool developed within GES4SEAS to support cumulative pressure risk assessment in marine ecosystems. Tikta is designed to help users evaluate environmental status in line with European policies and directives, in particular the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).

The course is structured over three intensive days and will feature contributions from scientists directly involved in GES4SEAS. Participants will work with real-world examples and practical exercises, gaining direct insight into how cumulative effects assessments can be applied to support ecosystem-based management and policy-relevant decision-making.

The summer school is aimed at researchers (both early-career and senior), as well as environmental managers, consultants, and policymakers. By the end of the course, participants will have acquired the skills needed to apply Tikta to assess risks arising from multiple human pressures at sea and to evaluate environmental status in accordance with MSFD guidelines.

Participation is free of charge, but the number of places is limited to 30 participants. Applicants are required to submit a motivation letter including a brief CV at the time of registration.
Selected applicants will be notified no later than 15 March 2026.

The AZTI Summer School 2026 is hosted by AZTI and contributes to GES4SEAS’ broader objective of strengthening capacity and shared understanding around cumulative effects and Good Environmental Status assessment in European seas.
