GES4SEAS Brings Marine Science to the Classroom in Barcelona

As part of GES4SEAS’ ongoing efforts to connect marine science with younger generations, ICM-CSIC recently hosted a special activity at the Institute Pau Claris in Barcelona. Over two days — on the 12th and 13th of June — two classes of 12-year-old students (25 pupils each) took part in this creative activity, exploring the theme of sustainable use of the ocean through comics.

This initiative is part of a broader GES4SEAS task, where partners across Europe are developing comics in multiple languages to promote ocean literacy and environmental awareness among school students.

The students here were challenged to develop their own comics inspired by the theme and key messages from the GES4SEAS project. Following the activity, one comic will be selected as the winner — this design will be further developed by project communication partner Science Crunchers, ensuring the final artwork matches the style of the other GES4SEAS comics being produced across the project.

Activities like this are an important part of the GES4SEAS Blue Schools initiative, helping to inspire curiosity about marine science, highlight the importance of ocean stewardship, and build a stronger connection between scientific research and the next generation.
