Prestigious Award for Baltic Sea Research

Professor Jacob Carstensen from Aarhus University, partner of the GES4SEAS project, and Professor Daniel Conley, from Lund University in Sweden, have been jointly awarded the prestigious Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris 2023.

This prize recognizes their research on eutrophication, water quality, hypoxia, and underlying biogeochemical processes in the Baltic Sea.

Carstensen and Conley’s work has transformed, developed, and broadened the field of Baltic Sea research. By combining expertise from different fields, they have gained a deeper understanding of the complex interactions between the different factors influencing eutrophication and hypoxia. They have also developed advanced methods to generate high-quality data and make accurate predictions about the ecosystem’s behaviour.

Their research has had a direct impact on the Baltic Sea environment and the implementation of the Baltic Sea Action Plan. They have identified the problems caused by eutrophication and hypoxia, and they have also proposed effective solutions. Additionally, they have widely communicated their findings to stakeholders and policymakers, helping to ensure that their work is put into practice.

Carstensen and Conley received the award on September 26, 2023, from H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm. They plan to use the prize, SEK 3 million, to continue and advance their research on how different organisms affect nutrient fluxes in water and sediments. They also plan to continue disseminating their knowledge to stakeholders and the public in order to raise awareness of the eutrophication problem and promote the implementation of solutions.
